"I didn't want to explain that only Lackers watched television, that we would never, ever poison our brains like that."

The Book of Fred: A Novel by Abby Bardi

I really enjoyed this book. I can't remember which of the websites on books recommended it, unfortunately.

It's about Mary Fred, who has to stay in a foster home because her parents are arrested for neglect (their sons Fred and Little Freddie died from lack of medical care). It's also about the three people who share their home with her. Of course they all learn from each other and whatnot.

It's told with from rotating viewpoints, which works quite well. A lot of the book is about people figuring out what they believe in. How does Mary Fred take to living outside her religious cult? And will her parents return to take her back to it?
