I'm quite a fan of retellings of fairy tales. This is quite clever -- 6 versions of the story, trying to come up with reasonable explanations for why, say, someone would claim to spin straw into gold.
Another good retelling of this story is Spinners by Donna Napoli. It's a more serious reworking as a novel. Van Velde's is more humorous.
